Mary Louise Newsome, 95 - born Mary Louise Petok, departed this life and entered the next life March 3, 2021 with true faith in God. Born in Portage, Pennsylvania to parents Victoria and John Petok, and sister to brother JR (deceased) and sister Sylvia, Mary was a true coal miner's daughter - her dad worked the hills and depths of western PA. Mary graduated from Hampton High, and afterward - inspired by the school nurse - herself went to nursing school and became a registered nurse at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh. She entered active service in the US Navy in 1952 as a Lt. JG, and shortly thereafter was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where she met, married and remained married to her husband, Bill, himself a Naval officer, who passed in 2019. Mary and Bill resided in a hefty chunk of the world during Bill's active duty service, including southern Europe and Cuba. Mary played some quality golf in her day, including the coveted hole-in-one. She was a true, helpful and loyal friend to those who called her friend, including her altar guild, Optimists, Navy and many neighborhood buddies. Daughter Vicky of Scottsdale, sons Bill of Vista and Matt of San Diego, and grandsons Will, Alex and Chris all revere, love and salute her love, kindness and strength. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (UC San Diego) by going on http://adrc.ucsd.edu/giving.html.
As San Diego remains in a COVID-19 restricted tier, the family has respectfully decided not to hold any gatherings at this time. There will be a short 30 minute ceremony along with Navy Honors but we are very limited to the number of people who may attend due to COVID restrictions. The ceremony at Miramar National Cemetery will be live streamed on March 24, 2021 at 12:30pm (PST).
