It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jeffrey “Jeff” Kanas, a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend to many. Jeff was deeply admired and respected by all who knew him. He passed away on December 16, 2024, while protecting and securing the U.S. homeland near San Diego, CA. Born in Islip, NY, Jeff was a man of integrity, selflessness, and unwavering loyalty to his family. He is survived by his loving wife Tracy, daughter Ella, son Connor, parents Tom and Gail, his sister Jen, family members, and friends.
As a dedicated aviator Jeff logged thousands of flight hours serving with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Navy. His skill, commitment, and passion for his country were evident in every mission he undertook. A graduate of Northwestern University with a degree in Music, Jeff’s love for the arts complemented his adventurous spirit. Jeff's sense of humor and quick wit were among his most endearing qualities. He had a unique ability to lift spirits with a well-timed joke or a clever remark, making every gathering a little brighter. His intelligence, curiosity, and love of sports led him to be a kind of guy who never backed down from a challenge, whether it was fixing something around the house, “You-Tubing” his next project. or cheering on his favorite teams -the Mets, Islanders, and Jets – who, despite his best efforts, never seemed to win championships!
Jeff's passing leaves an unfillable void, and he will be profoundly missed by his beloved wife Tracy, with whom he shared 21 wonderful years. Together they cherished watching Ella figure skate, cheering for Connor playing hockey, and taking his beloved dogs, Benny and Mojo, for their walks in the park. His memory will be treasured, and his life will continue to inspire his family, friends, and colleagues leaving behind a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to have shared in his journey.
In closing, our family would like to extend our deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love and support we have received since Jeff’s passing. To those who flew, drove, and called from near and far to stand by us, share memories, and say goodbye, we are profoundly moved by your love, generosity, and the strength you’ve provided us during this time. In lieu of flowers, we kindly ask you to consider honoring his memory by donating to the Great Pyrenees Association of Southern California, they are dedicated to the rescue, foster care, and placement of homeless Great Pyrenees, a cause close to his heart.
