Daughter to the late James M. and Leona G. Eldridge. “Mom” was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, sister and friend. She was always willing to help if she were able. From helping to care for her siblings at a young age to raising her own children, she loved with all her heart. Married young, Doris strived to do her best as a housewife and mother. She maintained that role until the last of her children graduated high school, often “adopting” any of the kids’ friends that chose to know her. Most of them only knew her as “Mom”. She had many interests including both carpentry (Degree in light construction from Pamlico Technical College) and landscaping.
After her last child flew the coop, Doris joined the workforce as a fire tower operator for the NC Forest Service, where she served 11 years as the Bolivia tower operator. Moving on from Forestry she got a job as a security officer working the gate at Brick Landing Plantation. Doris developed a strong bond with the residents and grew to call many of them “friend” or “family”. Some residents knew of her love of gardening and landscaping which led to a fulfilling side job after ending her shift with security. She continued to work landscaping jobs until reaching retirement age, at which point she went back to being a homemaker.
Doris passed away early Friday morning, October 11, with her three remaining children and one grandchild at her side. She passed as she wanted to, in her home. She was greatly loved and will be missed tremendously by any whose life she touched.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Russell Brown; daughter, Teresa Gillley; and sister, Judy Johnson.
She is survived by a son, Timothy Earl Brown; daughters, Tina Louise Jones and Tammy Lynn Brown; brothers, Roger Eldridge and Raymond Eldridge; sisters, Janice King and Darlene Phillips; grandchildren, Kitty, Tabitha, Mandy, Sandy, and Robin; great grandchildren, Kaytlin, Angel, Kasey, Josie, Jaxson, Jayse, Luke, Petey, and Josephine.
