Bowie, Maryland
Joanne McLean, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 2nd, 2024, at her home in Boynton Beach, Florida, surrounded by her loving husband and children. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Joanne began her journey graduating from Dundalk High School; where she achieved the honor of being the first runner-up in the Ms. Dundalk, Maryland beauty pageant.
Newly married; Joanne’s life along with her husband’s new career took her on adventures across Central America, Europe, and the Orient with her family spanning 12 years living and working overseas in such places as: Taiwan, Japan, Germany, and Panama; where she worked as a secretary for the Central Intelligence Agency. During her travels she dedicated her time to her children volunteering as Brownie troop leader, classroom mother, and a Catholic CCD teacher. She loved the “overseas” life. Later she settled in Bowie, Maryland and retired in sunny Boynton Beach, Florida.
Joanne's passions included relishing in organizing themed parties, cooking, engaging in bridge games with her close “overseas” friends, dancing, teaching her children in making steamed dumplings from scratch, and enjoying camping trips and “Maryland steamed crab” feasts with her large extended family. She also cherished moments of high tea with her daughters, watching old classic Doris Day movies on lazy Sunday afternoons, and showcasing her culinary skills with her renowned Japanese, Chinese, and German dishes.
A devoted individual, Joanne's impact on the lives she touched was profound.
Her unwavering faith, dedication to family, nurturing friendships, and love for her country shone brightly through her actions. She is survived by her husband of 65 years and her children - Kimberly, Lawrence, and Penny, along with cherished grandchildren Derek McLean and Haley McLean Fuller, as well as three adoring great-grandchildren.
Joanne, the youngest sister to Buddy, Patricia, and Donna Alfieri, was known as “Aunt Joanne” to many nieces and nephews within the Edwards, Pace, and McLean families. The family plans to hold a celebration of her life in the Northern Virginia area in October 2024, with invitations sent out via Evite.
