She was born on July 30th, 1923 in Ashford, Middlesex, England, to her parents Edwin and Topsy Newell.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and her husband, LTC. Lawrence Gardner Ropes, US Amy, whom she had married in England on September 7th, 1945. They lived in Miami, FL until 1945, when they moved to I.R.C.C. in Viera, FL. They had been married for 54 years. Jean served in the W.R.N.S. (Women’s Royal Navy Service) from 1942-1945 as a decoder in Liverpool and part of that time as a crew member of the “Louis Pasteur”, a troop ship sailing between Liverpool, New York, and Canada, coding and decoding messages across the Atlantic.
After arriving in the U.S., she and Larry moved to Coral Gables, FL and he received his Law Degree from the University of Miami.
Jean was a member and officer of the Coral Gables Junior Women’s Club for many years. She was also a member of Coco Plum Women’s Club, Museum of Science Guild, and then joined the Franklin Rush Chapter of the UM Cancer Society where she served as president for 2 years.
Jean is survived by two sons, David Gardner Ropes, (Sandy), in Hilton Head, S.C., John Newell Ropes in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and daughter Debbie Jane Kappas (Greg) in Sun City, AZ, six grandchildren Ali, Michael, Chelsea, Katie Berry (Austin), Michele Kappas, Tiffany McDanel, and three great grandchildren Lilly Ann Palmer, Stefan Taylor McDanel, and Millie Jean Berry.
