Thea and her family were a special blessing to Marjorie and we spent many hours visiting  as she related the joy of having Thea and the Grandchildren.  She was so proud of all the family.  I loved to go there and visit and even more loved having her and Jerald visit us whether in Bloomington, Indiana, Florida or Arizona.  She was a very special person and I know she is rejoicing with her husband now.  She is solely missed.

Will miss Margie very much.  She was a wonderful friend for over 60 years.  
She loved her family and friends very much and always made us welcome in her home.  She was a big part of my life.

Marjorie and Jerald both meant so much to my family and I am so grateful that we had the opportunity to know them.  My parents, Cleve and Frances Wilhoit, especially treasured their friendship.

A EULOGY FOR MARJORIE ANN BUTCHER

The lovely photo of Marjorie Ann Butcher that was with her obituary in THE HERALD TIMES prompted a memory of a visit years ago with her and husband Jerald.  The Butchers had become dear friends as Jerald, often with Marjorie, did painting and repair on my home for decades.

The visit was on a Veterans Day to pay tribute to Jerald's decorated service in World War Two.  With a twinkle in his always-penetrating eyes, Jerald told me of a recent consultation with his V.A. physician -- accompanied, of course, by Marjorie.  The doctor, Jerald said, looked at him, then at Marjorie and said, "Mr. Butcher, you robbed the cradle!"  The fierce pride and love for Marjorie, always present in that voice and those eyes, were unusually strong that day.

Many years earlier, my wife Frances and I invited Marjorie and Jerald to our home for tea.  It wasn't a "proper" English tea, but Frances was a bit "ceremonial" about it.  Clearly, for Jerald, it might have had just a hint of "snootiness." Not for Marjorie.  She made the conversation flow, as she always did, with stories about the accomplishments of daughter Thea and grandsons Bradley and Chase, and also about the artwork on our walls. The occasion, for all we knew, was literally her "cup of tea."

Much later, on another visit to the Butchers' home, a quite unexpected thing about them emerged when Marjorie said, "I want to show you some paintings we are working on."  I thought she must have misspoken and that she and Jerald were painting a room.  No, it was beautiful work with artist's brushes and paints on really interesting, colorful scenes that, yes, even Jerald was excited about.

In his last days, Marjorie and I visited Jerald at the Meadowood Health Pavilion,  The moment she entered his room, the deep, almost mystical, bond between them completely filled it.  The long years of devotion, hard work, love of their wonderful daughter and two fine grandsons -- and most of all, the sterling character of the couple's lives -- all that, in those moments, spoke more than any film could have captured.  Would that we all should be so blessed.

Marjorie will now rest beside Jerald in Arlington National Cemetery.  I have no idea how many other Hoosier couples rest there, but I do know there is none finer in those hallowed, sacred grounds.
