David Patrick Heffernan, age 65, of Bloomington passed on to be with his God on Tuesday afternoon, January 19, 2016 at the I.U. Health; Bloomington Hospice House. Born July 8, 1950 in Indianapolis, he was the fourth child of Thomas William and Nancy Ann (Ent) Heffernan. Dave proudly served his country for many years in the U.S. Marine Corps, Army and Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Burton Woolery Post # 18, V.F.W. Post #604 and a charter member of AMVETS 2000, all in Bloomington. He was a past commander of the AMVETS 2000 and had served as a state officer for the AMVETS. In addition, he had served on the Monroe County Veterans Honor Guard.
He is survived by his loving family; his wife, Nancy Jane Heffernan and his daughter Ali Marie Heffernan, both of Bloomington; his step-son, Matthew Abraham Broadwin, of Fremont, California; three brothers, Timothy Heffernan, of Houston, Texas, Kevin Hale, of Bloomington and Theodore Meng, of Round Rock, Texas; three sisters, Susan Prather, of Cypress, Texas, Mary Turner, of Panama City, Florida and Kathy Eckhardt, of Houston, Texas. He has too many nieces, nephews and cousins to list them all by name but he was loved by all who knew him. His cousins were more like siblings than just cousins in David’s eyes. He will be missed by all.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings.
A Christian Memorial Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the St Mary’s Catholic Church; 777 S. 11th St; Mitchell, IN with Fr. Rick Eldred officiating. An inurnment service will be held at a later date at Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Indiana. An Irish Wake will also be held at a later date at AMVETS 2000 in Bloomington.
