Robert Eugene Camp, 85, of Normal, IL passed away at 11:59p.m. on Friday August 20, 2010 at Heritage Manor in Normal, IL.
He was born February 19, 1925, in Maroa Twp., Macon County, IL, the son of Samuel Arthur and Madge Ella Crane Camp. He married Doris Ellen Vandervort, May 4, 1947 in Clinton,IL. She preceded him in death on December 20, 2004 in Bloomington. He is also preceded by his parents; two brothers, Leland and Sammy Camp and two sisters, Joan Leach and Stella Brown.
Robert is survived by one son, Stanley Eugene Camp, and two beloved grandchildren, Kelcy Vernice Camp and Mandi Ellen Camp. One brother, Larry (Jan) Camp; four sisters, Nina Donahower; Maribel Curry; Ruth (Joe) Slabaugh and Guyneith Fox.
He was drafted his Junior year from Maroa High School in 1943 into the Army Air Corp. He volunteered for Air Cadet and passed the test to be a pilot. He was sent to Ft. Grant (Camp McCoy), north and west of Tomah, Wisconsin; Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri for basic training; and stationed at San Antonio, Dallas, Midland, El Paso, and Kingman, all in Texas; from New Jersey was sent overseas to Diss, England; Paris, France, Nuremberg and Frankfort, Germany. He flew in the B17, as a tail gunner in the Flying Fortress. He was in the service for two and a half years than discharged from service duty in April 1947. He received his GED in 1947 at Maroa following his WWII discharge.
Robert owned Slabaugh and Camp Trucking, a milk hauling business for 30 years with partner and brother-in-law Joe Slabaugh, retiring in 1983. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00a.m. on Wednesday August 25, 2010 at East Lawn Funeral Home in Bloomington, IL. Visitation will take place at 5:00pm-7:00pm the night prior at East Lawn Funeral Home in Bloomington.
