Mary Ellen Williams

Mary was born April 23, 1925, in LeRoy, a daughter of Louis and Lenora Strange Hoover. She married Gerald E. “Whitey” Williams on April 28, 1944, at St. Matthew Episcopal Church, and they celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary in 2003.

Mary was a member of St. Matthew Episcopal Church; Louis E. Davis Post 56 Auxiliary; a past member of Bloomington Delphi; a Bloomington High School 1943 graduate; a working committee member of the 1983, 1988, 1993 and 1998 class reunions; and past member and treasurer of St. Agnes Guild of her church.

Mary retired in July 1985 from the City of Bloomington after 21½ years of service, nine of those as secretary to Mayor Richard Buchanan and city managers William L. Vail and Herman Dukes.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two sons, Daniel David Williams in 1991, and Jeffrey Charles Williams in 1965; three sisters, Juanita Carver, Alice Ferguson and Martha Underwood; and two brothers, Jack Hoover and Donald Hoover.

She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Sue Karger, and son-in-law Ronald Karger, Hixson, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Kimberley Marie (Karger) Chadwell, Seffner, Fla., and Meredith Joy Karger, Hixson, Tenn.; three great-grandchildren, Quinn, Hudson and Liesel Chadwell, Seffner, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was a caring, kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor and good friend. May she rest in peace. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Bloomington, with a service celebrating her life immediately following.
