Lyle was born April 26, 1935 in Quincy, MA to Vincent Alfred and Annie Mae (Brown) Day. He married the love of his life, Barbara Jane Frederick on March 23, 1957.
Lyle worked at State Farm for over 30 years. He began his career in the early years of computer technology working with the mainframe computers at State Farm's Corporate Headquarters here in Bloomington. He worked all over the country at State Farm's various regional offices, training, and implementing new systems. He finished his distinguished career as a Computer Analyst. He loved his work, and his strong work ethic, willingness to share his knowledge, and sense of humor made him a leader amongst his peers.
Lyle was the co-founder, coach and manager of Bloomington Lady Hearts. He did everything necessary to ensure the success of the team including coaching on the field, managing the finances, running countless tournaments, leading the team on several international trips and helping host the US Olympic team, as well as several international players. As a result, the team has been in existence for 39 years and is one of oldest women's softball organizations in the country. His commitment, contributions and passion for the game were recognized when he was inducted into the Illinois Softball Hall of Fame. He served as a volunteer assistant coach at Illinois Wesleyan University for over 20 years. In addition to his impact within the world of women's softball, he also donated his time to volunteer work and was honored with the State Farm Volunteer of the Year award. Lyle was a faithful Christian and served as a Sunday School teacher, a Deacon, and a lay preacher, and was most currently a member of the Eastview Christian Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Barbara; his three children, Abbie (Jerry) Soltwedel of Bloomington, IL, Kerry (Stacy) Day of Normal, IL, Lori Fenemor of St. Louis, MO; seven grandchildren, Kyle Day, Steven Soltwedel, Tori Fenemor, Rachel Glenn, Kylie Fenemor Wolff, Nicole Day and Chase Day; five great-grandchildren, Ari Day, Kya Day, Hunter Day, Hayden, and Rayleigh Day; one brother, Gary (Rose) Day of Florence, AL
Lyle was incredibly devoted to his family and he and his wife Barbara traveled literally tens of thousands of miles around the Midwest, across the US, and around the globe to attend their children's, grandchildren's and great grandchildren's school events and sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother in infancy.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Lyle Day will be 3 p.m. Sunday, January 28, 2024 at East Lawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Sunday before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Wounded Warriors, ASPCA, Shriners Children’s Hospital, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Cheyenne River Reservation.
