Dennis Reid Shirley

Born December 19, 1954 in Champaign to Robert and Barbara (Choate) Shirley; he married Melanie (Nafziger) Smith on September 2, 1993 in Champaign.

Surviving are his wife, Melanie Shirley of Bloomington; sister-in-law, Mary Hernandez of Bloomington; children, Emalene (Demetrius) Davis, Danielle (Andy) Miller of Monticello, IL and Willmont Smith of Bloomington; grandchildren, Madison Wilkins, Holden Miller and SkyAyre Cox; sisters, Debra Foltz of St. Joseph, IL and Sue (Larry) Brazelton of Ogden, IL; and brothers, Brian Broeker of Catlin, IL Kevin (Terri) Broeker of Ewing, MO and Kem (Jill) Broeker of Sebring, FL.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Barbara Broeker.

Dennis was a 1972 graduate of St. Joseph High School.

He will be remembered as a hard worker who had worked for Appl Sanitation and Woodard Construction, having been retired for 25 years.

Dennis had friends all over central Illinois as he never knew a stranger.

Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of East Lawn Memory Gardens in Bloomington. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
