Carol J. Meier, 83, of Towanda passed away peacefully on Wed. March 13th, 2024 at home surrounded by her loving family, after a very brief illness. Carol was born on March 18th, 1940 in Elwood, IN. to Minerva J. (Nee Evans) and Karl G. Dennis. She married Lawrence F. Meier on Oct. 10th, 1959 in Dyer, IN. Her husband Lawrence, sister George Ann Vestal, brothers Karl Dennis and half-brother Gerald Dennis all preceded her in death. She is survived by a half-sister Susan Dennis, four children; Cindy Chuksudoon (Chira) of Bloomington, Kelly Meier of Towanda, Jeff Meier of Towanda and Elizabeth Meier (Paul) of Crete. Three grandchildren; Jason (Chrissy) Jenkins, Stephanie Chuksudoon and Gabrielle Randle and four great- grandchildren Grace, Selah, Bethany and Miriam Jenkins.
Carol was a homemaker and devoted wife. Carol and her young family moved several times, allowing Lawrence to pursue a career in T.V. broadcasting. They began in Springfield, IL (WCIS Channel 20) then Griffith, IN (WGN) and finally Towanda (State Farm). Carol bloomed and grew roots in all of these locations as illustrated by her lifelong friendships spanning distances, over the course of sixty years.
Carol was a woman of strong faith and enjoyed being a member of Eastview Christian Church. Her love of helping people and serving lead her to volunteer her time and energy to the ECC food pantry. Carol’s love of cooking and baking allowed her to comfort and give support to grieving families through providing funeral dinners at ECC for so many, during their most painful times.
To say Carol was outgoing, is an understatement. Carol knew no strangers, only friends that she hadn’t met yet. Carol was the lady who would stop you in the grocery store to chat about the quality of your produce, much to the chagrin of busy people trying to get out of the grocery store in a timely manner. She had such a friendly way of speaking to people, that she would have them questioning where they knew her from.
Carol was a lover of nature and wildlife, babies, and pickled beets. Feeding anything that would make its way into her yard, including her neighbors. Carol was thoughtful, kind and considerate of all people. She was the epitome of helpful and always available to lend a hand. She served for many years as an election judge in Towanda with some of her favorite friends. She was an integral part of the Towanda Boy Scouts annual pancake and sausage supper for a decade. After her years of raising kids, Carol was approached by a friend and accepted a position as “The Sandwich Lady” at the Convenient Food Mart on Raab road. She loved interacting with her regulars and enjoyed making her own “Mad Money” while introducing many Normalites to homemade pimiento cheese sandwiches.
Carol had a passion for traveling and adventures. She was happiest when discovering new places. She had the good fortune to have visited Europe, Bermuda, Israel, Hawaii, The Bahamas, as well as nearly all of the United States. She was an avid road tripper and enjoyed many with her grandchildren. Carol also loved to drive, and was known for having a lead foot, which may have been passed down to at least one of her children. Carol loved fall and especially enjoyed travelling to New England to view the splendid fall foliage.
Carol always gave what she had, freely and generously. Her example of selflessness and service has been nurtured into her children and grandchildren and will continue to touch others, because of Carol. She will be missed tremendously by all that knew her and loved her.
At Carol’s request, she will be cremated. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Saturday April 13th from 12-2pm at Eastview Christian Church, 1500 Airport Rd, Normal IL,6176
