

He was born on February 11, 1937 in Bloomington to Wilber “Wayne” and Gladys “Lorene” (Rogers) Johnson. He married Edna Margaret Koopman on February 15, 1958. She preceded him in death on September 20, 2009.
Barney is survived by his loving children, Mark (Betty) Johnson, Brenda Johnson (Gene Yeast), Lisa Johnson (Rick Menssen) and Robin Johnson (Jay Gould); grandchildren, William “Will” Holliger (Raquel), Jesse Holliger, and Christine Johnson (Wilson Kong) 3 great-grandchildren; one brother, Roger Johnson (Mary); and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers, Eldon Johnson and Charles Johnson; and one sister, Rita Edmunds.
Barney dedicated his career to State Farm where he worked as a Data Processing Manager before retiring.
Beyond his professional life, Byron was a man of many passions. He was an avid sports fan, a golfer, a bowler, and a lifelong supporter of the New York Yankees, as well as an enthusiastic follower of Major League Baseball, Little League, college and high school sports. He also enjoyed playing dominos, cards and board games, sharing many laughs and friendly competition with his family and friends.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 14, 2025 at Epiphany Catholic Church in Normal, with Father David Richardson officiating.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2025 at East Lawn Funeral Home in Bloomington, where a prayer service will be at 4:45 p.m.
Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens.
