William Carr was born August 11, 1930 in the small mining village of Silksworth in the northeast of England. He left school at 14 to go down the pit and his first job was to pick the stones out of the coal as it went by on a belt. While working day shift he put himself through night school and after graduation he won a scholarship in Mining Engineering from King’s College in Newcastle. After college he went back to the mines this time in management. He quickly rose to General Manager of one the largest coal mines in England.
He married Joan West, also of Silksworth and a school teacher. They had three children; Christopher, Alexandra and Elizabeth.
Mr Carr’s expertise in longwall mining brought him to the United States. And after a brief year in Chicago, he moved to Alabama to become President of Jim Walter Resources, Mining Division. He remained in that position until his retirement.
An avid golfer and voracious reader, especially history books. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, Chris and Alex.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.johnsridouts.com for the Carr family.
