Sheridan William Shirley, 98, was ushered into the arms of Jesus on April 23, 2023, in Birmingham, Alabama. He was born on July 27, 1924, in Valdosta, Georgia, and spent his entire life in Birmingham. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps during World War II and attended New York Medical College, graduating in 1953. He started the Urological Surgery Department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where he was a pioneer in many urological procedures and was a practicing physician in Birmingham until the age of 95. As a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church, he was active in the prison ministry, The Deeper Life Sunday school class and he served as an elder.
Sheridan was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Shirley; his mother, Maymie Johnston Shirley; and his sister, Dorothy Shirley Matson.
Sheridan is survived by his beloved wife Barbara, with whom he shared over 20 years of marriage and his 101 yr old sister: Mary Louise Shirley Hodges. He is also survived by his children: Candace Lee (Ernest) of Auburn, AL; Patricia Markow (John) of Yucca, AZ; and stepdaughter Kathryn Maulden (Brent) of Navarre, FL. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Ernest Lee (Danielle) of Gulf Shores, AL; Sheridan Shirley Lee Scruggs (Clay) of Oxford, MS; Kathryn Lee Lowder (Josh) of Birmingham, AL; Ashley Thompson (Mike) of Daphne, AL; Christopher Hall (Mano), Alexa Hall, and Morgan Elizabeth Maulden. Sheridan is also survived by his great-grandchildren: Sydney Scruggs, Josh Scruggs, Maggie Lee, Anna Kate Lee, Rebecca Lee, Jack Lowder, Woods Lowder, MacKenzie Thompson, William Thompson, and Clairece Hall; and by his nephews: A. Gerry Hodges (Dorothy) and Gregory R. Hodges (Elizabeth) and many great nieces and nephews.
Sheridan will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. Sheridan’s legacy of compassion, excellence, and service to others will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
A celebration of life will be held on May 19, 2023, at 1:00PM at Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, AL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Briarwood Presbyterian Church Global Missions in Sheridan’s memory.
