She was born in Roanoke, Alabama on November 4, 1928, to John and Mary (Kitchens) O’Neal. Sarah graduated from Handley High School in Roanoke, Alabama. After World War II she met and married her husband, James David Boyd, who had returned from the war after being held as a Prisoner of War. They married on September 5, 1947, in Randolph County, Alabama. After raising three children, Sarah worked in the bookstore at Jefferson State Community College.
Sarah was a member of Huffman United Methodist Church for many years. She served as a Sunday school teacher, and also volunteered with the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts.
