Sam B. Murphree was born on September 26, 1932 in Anniston, Alabama to Sam B. Sr. and Ola Murphree. He is preceded in death by his wife Sarah, his parents Sam Sr., and Ola, and four siblings: Joyce Cooper (Leonard), Phyllis Laney (Paul), Barbara Lewallen (Hugh), and Gordon Murphree (Pat). He is survived by one sister, Nancy Houston (Roy), as well as numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.
Sam graduated from Oxford High School, where he played on the basketball team. He served in the Army after graduation, before moving to Birmingham, Alabama. He retired from American Cast Iron Pipe Company where he worked in the Shipping Department.
He met the love of his life, Sarah, through mutual friends. They were married on July 2, 1960. Married for 64 years, Sam and Sarah enjoyed their time together and traveled many places. Their favorite trip was seeing the Holy Land in Israel.
An avid gardener, Sam spent many hours in his backyard oasis where he cultivated his award-winning roses and grew various other plants. On Saturdays in the Fall, you could find Sam cheering on the Alabama Crimson Tide. He was the life of the party and loved to tell a good joke.
A truly devoted Christian, Sam led others with his tireless Christian example. He and Sarah would often volunteer within their community, as well as singing worship songs at the Village at Cook Springs.

Visitation information for friends and family of Sam B. Murphree: Visitation and services will be held at Johns-Ridouts-Elmwood Chapel, 800 Dennison Ave SW, Birmingham, AL 35211 on Thursday, November 7, 2024. Family will receive visitors from 10-11 am. Following visitation, there will be a Service led by Jimmy Wilson at 11 am. Graveside service will follow.
