Robert Harold Freeman, D.M.D. , 90, of Hoover Born May 30, 1925 in Tuscumbia went to be with his LORD January 12 , 2016. Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great grandfather and friend to many. Dr. Freeman was preceded in death by his parents William Eugene and Ella Brown Freeman and his children Robert H. Freeman, Jr. and Sarah Rebecca Freeman. He was also predeceased by his siblings - Elizabeth Hammett, Henry Freeman, Virginia Marshall, Gene, Howard, Jack Freeman and Dorothy Evans. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Bettye Gargis Freeman, sons- Bill, Jim (Leigh Anne) and Dr. John (Sheila) and grandchildren- Michelle (Randy) Waldrop, Bobby, James (Brandi), Alan (fiancée Victoria), Carter, John Michael, Carson and Rebecca Freeman. Also his great-granddaughters Madison and Hannah Waldrop. He was born and raised on a farm in Tuscumbia, AL. After graduating from Deshler HS he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corp during World War II. His tours of duty took him throughout North Africa, Sicily, Italy and central Europe serving as a tail gunner on multiple B-24 liberators. Upon discharge as a Corporal he returned to Tuscumbia where he met and married Bettye Lucile Gargis. After graduating from Florence State Teachers College (UNA) in 1951 he and Bettye moved to Birmingham where he earned his Doctorate in Dentistry at the University of Alabama in 1955. Dr. Freeman practiced dentistry for 55 years on Southside and then Hoover. He loved his work and his patients. He was a long time member, Deacon and Sunday School leader at McElwain Baptist Church before moving his membership to Green Valley Baptist. Other than the LORD, his family, and his patients his other great passion was golf. A charter member of Green Valley C.C. (now Hoover C.C.) he remained a member until his passing with many great friends that he loved so much. The family would like to thank Yvonne, Tiffany and Sharon for their loving and compassionate care of Dr. Freeman over the last few months. You are a special group of Angels. We would also like to thank the Alacare Hospice staff of Dr. Cynthia Baker, Holly, Dean and Stacy. Much love to you all. The family will receive friends on Thursday January 14th at 12:00 at Ridouts Elmwood Chapel with the service to follow at 2:00. Internment with Military Honors will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Herman D. Bolden and Fletcher Yeilding with Dr. Freeman's grandsons serving as pallbearers. The service will be directed by Dr. David Potts, Libby Potts and Dale Peterson. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to your favorite children's charity or the Wounded Warrior Project.
