He was born January 7, 1923 in Chilton County, Alabama. Bob served in the Navy in WWII and retired from BellSouth after 34 years. During retirement he and Doris enjoyed camping with the Cheaha Good Sam’s Club and traveling with the Senior Adult Ministry directed by Jerry Harris of Shades Mountain Baptist Church where Bob was an active member.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Wiley Cooper; mother, Mattie Hawkins Cooper; brothers Grady, Welby, and Emanuel; sisters, Gracie Glass, Lou Welch, Katsy Lambert, and Laura Mae Hammock.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Doris B. Cooper; daughter Sandra Allen (Lin); son Lynn Cooper (Robin); and daughter, Pam Alford (Barry); brother, Col. Carl Cooper; sister, Esther “Shortie” Blackwell; brother-in-law Vance Barnes (Ann); four grandchildren, two step- grandchildren; six great grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Bob was the most loving precious husband, father, Granddad, Gramps, and friend for whom anyone could ask. His life was so positive and uplifting to everyone who ever knew him. To those around him he was known as a compassionate servant who always put others first.
The family so appreciates the service and support from Angel of Mercy Elder Care and Vitas Hospice Care.
The family will celebrate Bob’s homegoing on Wednesday, September 4 at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel in Birmingham, Alabama. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. followed by the service at 1:00 p.m. Dr. Charles Carter will officiate. Graveside service will be led by Dr. Gary Harvey.
