She was born on November 17, 1947 to Mary and Brooks Sisson. She spent her childhood in Inglenook Alabama, and graduated from Hewitt Trussville High School.
She went on to study Education and Mathematics at the University of Montevallo earning her BS in Mathematics and completed her Masters degree also in Mathematics from during her time as a teacher, wife and mother.
She met the love of her life, Lonnie William (Bill) Turner while in Montevallo and they eventually Married. Even though they have been parted by death, their Marriage of 54 years and 11 months is something to be admired.
A passionate educator, there are many students that will attest to her ability to teach Math- including her Husband! Bill will tell you that without her, he would have never been able to earn his degree; He was always her most prized pupil, but there might have been a little bias.
Mary Jane and Bill went on to adopt two magnificent children- Tim(Heather) and Danica(Alison.) Tim and Danica will tell you they hit the adoption lottery with their parents. They grew up in a loving home and were taught what it meant to be regarded as a “good person” and exemplify the love of Jesus in their daily lives. Mary Jane and Bill served as wonderful role models and their children will always be grateful for their example.
Mary Jane went on to finish her teaching career at Birmingham-Southern College where she only to served as a Mathematics Professor and also an Education Professor where she taught aspiring teachers her craft. Her legacy lives on to this day in many schools across our great nation.
After her retirement, Mary Jane spent time traveling with Bill and visiting her many friends and family. She loved seeing new places and visiting old ones. She also earned multiple Bunko championships while retired – likely the only time in her life she “rolled the dice” outside of her efforts or choosing.
Mary Jane loved, and loved hard- if Mary Jane loved you, you had no doubts about it. If she didn’t, you likely wouldn’t know the difference. She loved her family, she loved her Friends, and she REALLY loved her Granddaughter, Chloe. She enjoyed attending Chloe’s cheer events and was a supportive Grandmother and Role model to her.
Mary Jane really loved Jesus, her Church and Church Family. Mary Jane and Bill have been active members of Pinson Methodist for over 45 years- serving the Lord and making countless friendships while exemplifying her love of Jesus to all who had the privilege of meeting her
A celebration of her life will be held at the church she loved so much, Pinson Methodist, on May 9th. Family Lunch at 10:30. Visitation from 12:00-2:00. Celebration of Life at 2:00 PM. Graveside will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
