Martha Hill Nickell

Martha Louise Hill Nickell passed away peacefully in her sleep, on July 16, 2022. She was born in Birmingham, AL on July 24, 1953, to her parents, Ralph B. Hill and Martha Hazelwood Hill Smith. She is proceeded in death by her parents and a son William Boyd Nickell III. She is survived by her husband Dr. William Boyd Nickell II, of Birmingham, AL, her sons Dr. Ryan Ashley Nickell (Angela) of Houston, TX and Christopher G. Nickell (Tanya) of Atlanta, GA, her daughter Lori Elizabeth Nickell of Birmingham, AL, her granddaughter Ashley Nickell Rubidoux of Huntsville, AL, cousins Frank Sparks and Diane Sparks Owens (Gordon) of Birmingham, AL, as well as several other grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

Martha had a long and distinguished career in nursing, serving as head nurse in neuro-orthopedics at Baptist Montclair and Brookwood Hospital. She then began working as a surgical nurse in her husband’s plastic surgery operating suite and practice, until her retirement in 2006. She loved flowers, gardening, and related to people internationally about their love for West Highland Terrier dogs.

There will be a graveside service on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at 11:00 am in Elmwood Cemetery. There will not be a public visitation at the funeral home. Family and friends are asked to meet at Johns Ridout's Elmwood Chapel located at 800 Dennison Ave. SW Birmingham, AL., by 10:45am and we will process down together to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Birmingham Humane Society or your favorite charity.
