Howard C. Goodwin

The second son of William Curtis and Frances Love Goodwin, he was born on December 26th, 1947, in Cullman, AL. Howard graduated from Samford University (1970) Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY (1972). He was a life-long learner, always reading, always learning more about our world and all that God created.

At Samford he met his wife, Cynthia Mallett of Miami, Florida, and they enjoyed over 51 years of marriage. Howard and Cindy have two children, David (his wife, Janet), and Anne Marie Wilson (her husband, Trey), and three grandchildren, Kristen Lynn Wilson, Joshua Harris Wilson, and Katherine Laurel Goodwin.

Howard is survived by his older brother Ken (his wife, Sylvia), and his two sisters who he loved very much, Martha Porter and Melba Wiegand (her husband, Mickey). He enjoyed time with extended family including his nieces Sondra Goodwin Ramsden (her daughter, Ava), Amy (her husband, Scott Browning, and their children Macy, Matthew, and Harris) Stephanie (her husband, Keith Cooper and their children Presley and Gage), and nephew Nathan Wiegand (his wife, Leah and their daughter Charlotte), and a huge number of cousins, (so many cousins! ) who he could name even in his last days.

As an ordained Baptist Minister of Music, Rev. Goodwin served churches in Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, and Alabama (the former Woodlawn Baptist Church). Reverend Goodwin served more than 45 years in a variety Ministerial positions and the last 10 years as Senior Pastor of Terry Parker Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida. We won’t say which was his favorite!

If you ever spent more than 10 minutes with Howard you probably heard about his choir tour to Tokyo in 1970 with the Samford A Cappella Choir for the Baptist World Alliance, and his favorite vacations to Niagara Falls and Alaska.

After retirement, Howard and Cindy returned to Birmingham and have participated as active members of Baptist Church of the Covenant, where a Celebration of his life and ministry will take place on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 1:30 pm with visitation to follow, Rev. Erica Hartman Cooper officiating.

Most of all, he was Howard, he was Dad, he was Papa. Howard loved his family and friends, and we love him and grieve his sudden loss.
