Emily Green was born February 17, 1918 in Passaic, New Jersey. She remained in the area before being brought to Alabama to live in a series of foster homes in the Birmingham area. Her last foster home was in Ensley where she graduated from high school in 1936 and excelled in basketball and swimming.
In 1937, she married H Leo Clark of Ensley and supported him faithfully until he passed in September 2003. They lived in Fairfield on Oak Place from 1945 until 2003. Shortly after H Leo died Emily moved to an apartment in Hueytown where she lived until an enjoyable period of independent living at Pleasant Villa in Pleasant Grove. In 2013, she moved in with her daughter, Sandi and husband, Ken, in Pleasant Grove and later moved with them to Chelsea. They, with the help of family, caregivers and Southeast Hospice, gave Emily constant tender, loving comfort and care until she died at home on March 5, 2018.
Emily is survived by her four children, Sandi (Ken) Cleveland, Harry (Barber), Larry (Joan) and Wayne, 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. Also, left to cherish her memory are the survivors of the Robert and Margaret (Emily’s sister-in-law) Maxson family and a multitude of friends.
Emily was an outgoing, fun, loving person who quickly made friends with her happy spirit and quick smile. She enjoyed singing, bowling, exercise classes, games, birds and travel with fellow Christians and almost everyone she met. In her later years, she often talked about reaching the age of 100 and made it a goal and a success. She served many people, especially her family, and brought joy wherever she went. Emily was an active member of churches of Christ in Ensley, Belview and Pine Lane before age limited her participation. Her children have enjoyed active, productive lives, largely due to her nurturing and her example of service to others. She will be missed, but never forgotten.
Service will be conducted by Phillip Owens at Elmwood Chapel on Thursday March 8, 2018 at 11am. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pine Lane church of Christ or the charity of your choice.
