Charles S. Turner, Jr., 86, of Birmingham, Alabama won victory over Parkinson’s disease and went to be with his Lord on January 18, 2018. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Charlie was a graduate of Hueytown High School and joined the United States Air Force in 1950. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and was also stationed in the Philippines, Japan, and Germany. He retired after 23 years and went back to school to earn his Bachelor degree, and two Masters degrees in Education from UAB. He served as a teacher and eventually an Elementary School Principal in Jefferson County until his retirement in 1993.
Charlie married Jo Ann Phillips from Birmingham in 1954 and was a faithful husband for 63-1/2 years. He was a dedicated layperson of Christ in multiple churches all over the world. Charlie served as a teacher, leader, SS director, and deacon leader. The couple served together wherever they were stationed, and in 1972 became members of Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Birmingham until moving to Montgomery in 2012.
Charlie “Paw Paw” was preceded in death by his father, Charles S. Turner, Sr.; mother, Julia Northrop Turner; brother, James M. Turner; sister, Jackie Copeland; and daughter-in-law, Shea Young Turner. He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Phillips Turner; children, Charles David Turner (Leigh Ann), Phyllis T. Rollan (Robert), and Timothy D. Turner. He is also survived by grandchildren, Charles Tyler Rollan (Jess), Darrick Mitchell Turner (Leah), Ansley Kathryn Aldridge (Aaron), Haylie Danielle Reeves (Daniel), Jacob Trent Turner, Luke Anthony Turner, and Amelia Ann Turner; great grandchildren, Ryleigh Kathryn Aldridge, Jase Matthew Aldridge, Cooper Mays Rollan, and Jackson Gehrig Rollan; also numerous nephews, nieces, and other family members.
Visitation at Rideouts in Trussville, Monday, January 22, 2018, noon – 2 pm funeral following at 2 pm with internment at Forest Crest Cemetery.
