January 18,1924 to Geanie McLellan Smith and Dave Smith. While in her teenage years, Merle met her
loving husband, Bill Hendon while living in Wylam. She graduated from Ensley High School later on.
Merle flipped tin in the tine mill to help advance the war efforts during World War II and after the war married Bill on June 1,1946. Merle and Bill will be remembered for hosting family and friends at their cabin on the Warior River and at their home. Both were active members of Vinesville Baptist Church for many years. After Bill's passing in 1992, Merle moved to Homewood, Alabama and started attending Dawson.
Merle is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill Hendon, her parents, brother and sister-in-law, James "Doc" and Nancy Smith, Brother, WW "Bee" Smith.
Merle is survived by her children: son and daughter-in-law, Lt. Col. USA (Ret) Russ and June Hendon, San Antonio TX; son, CMDOM(SW)USN (Ret) Warren Hendon, Fairfax, Va.; daughter, Sherry Hendon Welch, Clay, Al, her grandchildren: AEC(AW)USN(Ret) Howard Hendon, Villa Rica, Ga., Heather Hendon Howard, Douglasville, Ga., Tim Hendon, Lynwood, Wash., Mary Hemmen and Capt. ALARNG David Simmons from Homewood, Alabama, her great grandchildren: Megan, Halle, Griffin, Nikola, Natalia, Lizzy, Michael and Zach with a host of several nieces and nephews with many cousins.
We are grateful for the care Merle received at Greenbrair AT the Almont for so many years. We are very thankful for Mrs. Daisy Perrigin, who faithfully served her through the Homebound Ministry at Dawson.
