Agnes Rogers Clark, Noted Educator from Pioneer Family, is dead at 90 Mrs. Clark, born on February 9, 1925, died at home on September 6th after a long illness. She was the daughter of Claude Jonathan and Agnes McDowell Rogers, the mother of Jonathan Rogers Clark and William Henry Clark, IV, deceased, the aunt of Molly Bass Brown and the great aunt of Molly Brown Strachan. of Atlanta, Georgia. Both of Mrs. Clark's grandparents came as pioneers to the Elyton area in the 1890s, helping plan and develop the Ensley - Fairfield - Wylam areas. Jonathan Rogers, her paternal grandfather, came here from the family home, Speigner, to serve the young Tennessee Coal and Iron Company as their Superintendent of Mines. He was owner and director of The Bank of Alabama, (later part of Birmingham Trust National Bank), and was president of the Jefferson County Commission and the Alabama Prison Board. Her maternal grandfather Marion Holt McDowell, was a land developer and real estate invesment banker, playing an important role in the expansion of the 'Magic City' after United States Steel took over TCI. Her father, Claude Jonathan Rogers, was the County's first certified civil engineers, serving as Jefferson County Engineer during much of the last century, and developing much of the City's early roadway network. Mrs. Clark received her BA from Birmingham Southern, her MA in Counseling and School Administration from UA Tuscaloosa. She earned an MA in Social Work from William and Mary College and her educational Specialist Degree from UAT. She was employed as a school Psychologist and Psychometrist, a Counselor, and a teacher of special education by the Birmingham Board of Education. She was a Field Director with the American Red Cross in Japan during the Korean War. She met and married her husband William Henry Clark, III of Scarsdale, N.Y. while both were stationed in Tokyo, Japan. Later she became Principal of the Birmingham Boys Industrial School. She was a child welfare worker with the former Department of Pensions and Securities, a medical / psychiatric social worker, and upon retirement, she was contracted as a Psychometrist with the Shelby County School System. Mrs. Clark held memberships in Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board, Who's Who in American Women, Who's Who in American Colleges, Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Lambda Delta, Kappa Delta Epsilon, the American Association of Psychologists, the American Association of Social Workers, and the American Association of Vocational Education. She was a longtime member of The Church of the Advent and the Birmingham Country Club. Enjoying life until the end, Mrs. Clark spent much of her latter years visiting her son Jonathan in Marbella, Spain, and exploring the cities and countryside of the Iberian Peninsula. Funeral services to be conducted by Johns-Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel, visitation on Saturday, Sept. 12th at 1pm, with Graveside Service at Elmwood Cemetery at 2pm.
