I've just learned of Dr. Shook's passing.   He was my doctor when I was a young mother and almost died with pneumonia.  I credit him and God for saving my life.   I went with him on one of the Mission trips to Nicaragua in 2000.  It was a wonderful experience.   I'm sorry I didn't learn about his death in time to attend the services.   He was a special man.

Dr. Shook was my mentor. I wouldn’t be a physician today if not for him. He challenged me, encouraged me, and inspired me. He was giving and loving. He lives on in my heart and in the countless lives he’s touched over his many decades of service and care. He was an incredible, legendary man.

Dr Shook and I met when I became his randomly assigned patient in 2016. Through the course of conversation, it was revealed that he and my late father, William L Hughes, went to med school together. They had been colleagues and friends for a long time. He referred to dad as one of his best friends. 
He was my primary care physician beyond OU up until the end. As I learned about his many great contributions to medicine over the years, he'd also share stories about the times he spent with my dad. In a way, it became more like stopping by for a social visit with medicine being a formality.
Indeed, a truly great man, doctor and humanitarian. I'm very proud to have known him, and I'll miss him terribly. From the Hughes family, our deepest condolences.

Dr. Boyd Shook 🍎was an outstanding doctor who cared about his patients. He was my doctor 💊 for over 10 years. He will be missed. I will miss not been  able to see or say hello to him on Saturday 🌄🌅 Morning. 

Dr. Shook made a lasting impact on me during my time at Manos Juntas Clinic as a premedical student. It was so evident in his interactions with his patients that he truly cared for each of them: he would greet this patient with a hug or ask about this one's family member, and you could tell that he was as happy to see them as they were to see him. He truly loved his work and believed in fighting for universal access to healthcare, at great personal sacrifice. When I began volunteering under Dr. Shook, I had the intention of going into surgery because I had many misconceptions about what a primary care doctor's job was like. But watching his interactions with his patients completely changed my point of view. I realized that what I wanted most out a medical career was to build what Dr. Shook had built - long-term relationships and trust with his patients, where true care could be provided, not just a quick impersonal prescription. He inspired me in so many ways, but this is the one image I will always remember him by - that big smile and hug when his patients came into his office. Dr. Shook, thank you for teaching me what it looks like to be a truly excellent and caring primary care physician.

The passing of Dr. Shook is a solemn reminder that our time is so sacred and fleeting. 

Though my time with the great doctor was only a few years worth of Saturdays during my high-school and college years and eventually succinctly summarized as a one-liner in a medical school application, the foundational importance of this experience is clear now in this small reflection.

A physician truly dedicated to the art and science of providing medical care for those who are left to survive on the resource barren fringes of our grand society, a teacher who had the patience to mentor adolescent minds interested in doctoring, and just an all around great man who would feed the volunteers Thai food on 23rd Street.

Dr. Shook will be missed by an innumerable many - his patients, his family and friends, but his impact will live on for a long time. In my own life his dedication, compassion, and wisdom will live on as an ideal to live by and strive for everyday.  

I credit Dr.Shook for inspiring me to become a doctor. He was the embodiment of service, something I will work my whole life to emulate. He never hesitated to create a welcoming environment for patients, visiting doctors, and volunteers at Manos Juntas. He oversaw my volunteerism since I began three years ago, through his guidance and support I have grown as not only a volunteer but as a person. I know the clinic kitty Manos (the real boss) will miss him greatly. Every time I eat pizza (he ordered at the clinic every Saturday for us) I will think of Dr. Shook. He touched the lives of so many, and the world is a better place because of him.

Our hearts go out to Dr. Shook's family. You are in our thoughts and prayers. My mother-in-law was so blessed by having him as her Doctor at Manos Juntos for 8 years. Truly, an incredible gift.  I also had the opportunity to meet Dr. Shook a couple of times when I would take her to the appointments. I was impressed by his love, generosity, care, and loved his sense of humor. He is an incredible man who gave so generously. What care he demonstrated to my mother-in-law. I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to express gratitude to him this summer. We are all saddened by his passing and pray that you experience God's love and comfort in a powerful way. Thank you for sharing Dr. Shook with the world. Dr. Shook was a patient of ours at Oral Surgery Specialists, and boy did he know how to make us laugh. He learned all of our names by heart, and we would instantly light up the second any of us saw his name on our schedule. He always joked about whose butt he was gonna kick at each visit, as visits to our office were never fun, but they were with him. He was a special man, and anyone who had the opportunity to meet him would agree. We are sending our deepest condolences; we will be missing his presence at our office.  

You will never be forgotten Dr. Shook! You are God's blessing to everyone. May you rest in peace. Thank you for all the kindness and help you provided to people who are in need. World will never be the same without you. You are a legend! 

Sorry to hear of the loss of a generous and skilled physician and colleague.  

Dr. Shook and his colleague and friend Dr. Kathy Scheirman (right)  traveled across the state educating people about the Affordable Care Act.  Their love for healthcare and helping people always at the forefront of their lives. 

This very kind man treated my dad, after he had given up hope in his 80s. It was in 2013 after many, many different doctors and appointments it was Dr. Shook that made the difference! RIP Dr. Shook and Thank you for being the type of doctor that exemplifies the profession! 

I’ve never met anyone who gave so much to so many.  Doc exemplified what it means to be a healer, in his spirit and his action.  His life was his message and it will carry on in all of us who had the honor to witness it.  

Dr. Shook was a man of great humor and kindness. My heartfelt sympathy goes to the Shook family.

Kathy your father was a very caring man and doctor. He gave me information about my mom’s cancer and encouragement. My dad started a “worry clinic “ with dr Vernon Sisney here in Oklahoma City. He wouldn’t have started a clinic out of the country unless a golf course was nearby! Your dad put patients first. He taught you well-it showed in your ministry.

I had the honor of being Dr. Shook’s intern from June 2021 to June 2022. I was a volunteer before he gave me a chance to be his sidekick. I learned how to be a good physician and how to be a good person from Dr. Shook. Not through his words, but through his actions. He was a man who cared deeply for the community of Oklahoma City and for future healthcare workers. I am forever in debt to him for the knowledge and experiences he was able to provide me with. I will carry it with me for the rest of my life. May you rest you in peace Dr. Shook. 

Dr. Shook, my mentor, my rock.  From the first time I met you while volunteering at the Manos Juntas Clinic in 1998, you embodied the kind of compassionate doctor I wanted to be.   May your family be comforted by the significant impact you have made on many students' lives.  Your unwavering memory will continue on as we practice medicine in the way that you have taught us. My earliest memory of Uncle Boyd is on a farm when Liz, Kathy and Judy were high school age. I'm not sure if Jennifer was even born at that time. There was a riding ring either attached to the house or very close, and I remember Uncle Boyd standing out there with horses on a sunny day.  I think he had a cowboy hat on. It was a pretty epic image for me. I know he will be missed and was greatly loved.
