John was born February 12, 1947, in Grinnell, Iowa, son of the late Harvey Theodore Spading and Catherine Angelina Walsh Spading, and grew up in Victor, Iowa.
He was a graduate of Victor High School and was a proud veteran of the US Air Force where he received training in the Russian language.
In the early 70’s John moved to the Pacific Northwest and began a long and successful career as a Systems Analyst in the Telecommunications industry. He last worked for Verizon Wireless in Bellevue, Washington.
Having grown up on a farm in Iowa, John had acquired many skills. He was skilled as an auto mechanic, woodworking, and he could fix almost anything. John loved sailing and during the 70’s he sailed to Fiji with three other people. John was also a wine connoisseur. For many years he was a member of a Wine Club and even made his own wine, starting with picking the grapes himself. His homemade wine received rave reviews from his Wine Club.
John is survived by his two sons; Evan J Spading of Tacoma, Washington and Ethan H Spading of Kirkland, Washington; his former wife, Kathleen (Kay) Spading, who was John’s caregiver and medical advocate for many years; his sisters Mary Kay Wright of Burington, Iowa, Rosemarie Cowan of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Michelle Spading of Champaign, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his sister Janet Kohen.
The family will receive friends for a celebration of John’s life on September 28, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. at the Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Bellevue, Washington. The address is 1215 145th Place SE, Bellevue, Washington.
