Dad was married to the love of his life, Myrtle for over 67 years and now will continue those years together. Dan is survived by his four children, Douglas, David, Drew and Katherine, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
So many people loved Dad and remembered him for his time at Belleville West High School. He touched so many young people during his time there. He was also one of the longest active member of The Belleville Kiwanis Club, where he took on many leadership roles, which included President and Vice-President. He received many awards in the Club, including the prestigious Amador Award, given to those who have demonstrated the pursuit of charitable, benevolent and community service activities consistent with the Objectives of Kiwanis. There is a Belleville West Key Club scholarship in Dan’s name and honor.
Dan was an educator through and through. After his studies at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign he became a teacher at Belleville West and during his career there became assistant principal of Belleville West. During that time, Dan was a participant of the Secretarial Initiative on Teenage Alcohol Abuse: Youth Treatment Conference, where he worked to educate teachers and students on the impact of alcohol and drug abuse.
Dad will always be remembered as a leader in his community, protector to his family, a great husband and a light to those who knew him. Over the years, this extended family built fond memories on The Farm, over 4th of July, building gardens, playing cards, and in RV trips around the country.
It was amazing when we went around town how many people knew Dad and respected him. Never did I hear a negative comment. His word was his commitment and his loyalty was forever.
“And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.” Daniel 12:2–3 (ESV)
