Charles proudly served in the Air Force for four years and worked as an electrician for Monsanto for over 35 years. He adored animals, especially his cats, Buddy and Junior. Charles enjoyed fast pitch softball, bowling, golfing, bird watching, fishing, and watching Cardinals baseball. He was athletically inclined and was inducted into the Southside Fast Pitch Hall of Fame. He also loved to travel and was finally able to visit Australia, which he had always dreamed of doing. Charles was a hardworking man with deep rooted faith and an unwavering love for his family. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James C. Summers and Lottie E. (Young) Summers; beloved wife, Joyce E. Summers; longtime companion, Helen Summers; grandson, Adam Brun; siblings, Buelah Young, Margorie Presley, Karleen Cornett, Peggy Kimmel, and James “Buddy” Summers, Jr.; and best friend, Bill Conklin.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his children, Teresa (Russ) Howard, Denise (Clay) Hoyt, Grey (Jamie) Bahorich, Shawn Bahorich, Kimberly (Terry Wirick) Summers, and Kelly (Darrin Donahue) Summers; grandchildren, Duston (Heather) Bahorich, Alex Brun, Chris Corona, Auston Bahorich, Brianna (Arjan Spaninks) Brun, and Matt Corona; great-grandchildren, Oliver and Lillie Bahorich; siblings, Janice “Lovell” Gross, Ronald Summers, Gale Dykes, John (Rosemary) Summers, and Pamela Summers; plus numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Visitation will take place on Monday, December 11, 2023 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home, Belleville, IL.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at 1:00 PM at the funeral home, with interment to follow at Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, IL. After services have concluded, there will be a gathering held at the Swansea Improvement Association.
The family encourages guests to wear their favorite sports memorabilia in honor of Charles’ love of sports.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to Feral City 4 Feral Kitties, in honor of Charles’ affinity for cats.
