Bill is survived by his wife, Garland Debner Pohl; daughters, Heather Pohl and Allison Pohl (Patrick Brogan); grandsons, Jack (Kassidy) and Carrick Brogan; sister in law, Marilyn Debner Todd and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill is predeceased by his son, William F. Pohl, III; his parents, and siblings, Dr. Ruth Von Pohl and Ralph Pohl.
Bill attended high school in Sylacauga, AL. During his first year of college, and as a member of the National Guard, he was called to active duty. He held the rank of Staff Sergeant while serving in a US Army, Anti-Aircraft Artillery unit in Japan during the Korean War. Upon discharge from the Army his father sent him to Texas to attend The University of Houston, School of Technology. After finishing school he worked in construction design for several companies: Austin Steel Company, John Brown, and National Oilwell. He reluctantly retired at the age of 83.
Bill met Garland Debner on a blind date while at UH and they wed in 1960. They were married for 63 years. They traveled extensively in Mexico, sharing a love for Pre-Colombian archaeology and artifacts. Later they traveled the world by train and rental car with their children. Bill’s hobbies included fishing, refinishing furniture, caning chairs and there was nothing he couldn’t repair. He was an avid reader, particularly of historical books on the Civil War. He was especially proud of his grandsons and enjoyed attending their various sporting events.
Visitation Thursday, November 21st at Earthman-Bellaire, 4525 Bissonnet, Bellaire from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, November 22nd at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 9900 Stella Link Road, Houston, TX at 11:00 AM. Burial to follow at Forest Park Westheimer, 12800 Westheimer Rd.
