Sister Maryann was born Mary Shanahan in Knocknagoshel, Co. Kerry, Ireland to James and Mary O’Connor Shanahan. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at St. Michael’s Convent, County Clare, Ireland in August 1948. Sister consecrated her life to God through Profession of Perpetual Vows at Villa de Matel in Houston on August 15, 1956.
Sister Maryann’s academic preparation began at St Joseph Hospital School of Nursing Houston, Texas where she trained professionally as a nurse. Sister went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Dominican College, Houston, Texas. During the course of her life, Sister ministered as a nurse at many hospitals and nursing homes including: St. Joseph, Houston, TX; Hotel Dieu, Beaumont, TX; St. Charles, Newellton, LA; St. Placidus Convent, Houston, TX and St. Anthony Center, Houston, TX. Sister also served as a patient representative at St. Michael Hospital, Texarkana, AR and St. Mary Hospital, Port Arthur, TX.
Sister Maryann is survived by nieces and nephews in South Carolina, New York and Ireland.

Sister Maryann’s body will be received at the Immaculate Conception Chapel, Villa de Matel, 6510 Lawndale Street, Houston, Texas at: 5:00 PM on August 20, 2024, followed by Evening Praise and a celebration of her life. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at 10:30 AM on August 21, 2024. A Rite of Committal will follow at Villa de Matel Cemetery.
