Sister Helen Spanos, C.V.I.

Sister Helen Spanos, C.V.I., died on Wednesday, April 23, 2024, at the age of 93. She was born on January 30, 1931, to Nellie and John Spanos in Houston, Texas. She entered the Congregation of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament on August 15, 1949. and made her perpetual Profession of Vows on August 15, 1955.

After graduating high school from Incarnate Word Academy, she earned her B.A. Degree in Education and Master of Religious Education from the University of St. Thomas in Houston.

Sister Helen loved being an Incarnate Word Sister and serving the mission of Jesus. She shared her many gifts wherever she felt God was calling her to serve. She began her ministry as an elementary school teacher and then moved on to serve in Youth and Adult religious education and Hispanic Ministry serving at Holy Name Parish, Sacred Heart Co- Cathedral in Houston, and St. Andrew Church in Channelview, Texas. She also served as a home missionary and as an adult educator in the East Texas Project (Huntsville area) sponsored by the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. She ministered in her community as vocation director and director for the sisters in formation. She was one of the pioneer sisters in her community to serve in Huehuetenango, Guatemala. In her 75 years of ministry, her love of God and His people and her warm personality allowed her to build the Kingdom of God as she served with joy and gratitude.

Sister was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, George and wife, Rena.

She is survived by three nephews, John, Joe and Frank Spanos and extended family.

All services will be at the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, 6510 Lawndale Street, Houston, Texas 77023. The wake service will be on Monday, April 29, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in the Villa de Matel Chapel followed by interment at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
