Roger William Johnson died peacefully on June 8, 2016 in Houston, Texas at the age of 91. He was born on May 9, 1925 in Flatonia, Texas to Willard D. and Erna A. (Stein) Johnson. On February 6, 1949, he married Lillie Mae Doehring in Flatonia, Texas.
Roger is survived by his beloved wife, Lillie Mae of 67 years; children, David and Leticia Johnson, and Diann and Mark Flowers; grandchildren, Sherry and Ed Martinez, Crystal and Carlos Quintero, Cristen Pady, Tyson Johnson, Amanda Johnson, Aimee Johnson, and Andrea Johnson; great grandchildren, Casandra, Sebastian, Anthony, Kamron, Amber, Caitlyn, Kaylynn, Joseph, Kyndyll, Matthew, Jocelyn, and Luke; and numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Charlotte Rose Andrews of Baytown, Texas.
Roger’s love for life, his family, his faith, and his country were his highest priorities. Among his many enjoyments were music, singing, reading, traveling, playing games, sports, and family camping trips. He graduated from Flatonia High School in 1943, attended Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Texas for one year, and went to work for McDonnell Douglas in Tulsa, Oklahoma installing radar systems in B24’s until the end of World War II. After returning to Flatonia, Texas after the end of World War II, Roger worked in his father’s drug store and electric supply company. He married Lillie Mae Doehring, in 1949. After moving from Flatonia, Texas to Houston, Texas in early 1954, Roger began working for Buffalo Electric Company as a salesman. During the next seven years, the couple welcomed two children into their home. His children remember him as a kind, gentle, patient father who encouraged them to pursue their goals. In 1993, Roger retired from Graves Electric Company.
Roger was an active and dedicated member of the Westbury United Methodist Church, the Westbury Prime Timers, the AARP Chapter #1056, and the Flatonia Masonic Lodge #436A.F. & A.M.
Roger was a loving, caring, and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and a loyal friend to all of those who knew him. He will be greatly missed and forever loved by his family. He was considered a role model by many, especially his children and grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home on Monday, June 13, 2016, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. A funeral is scheduled at Flatonia Methodist Church Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at 2:00 pm, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery, and with a reception to follow at Newman Hall. Reverend C.J. Tillinghast will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Roger’s life.
Pallbearers will be Sherry Martinez, Crystal Quintero, Cristen Pady, Tyson Johnson, Amanda Johnson, Aimee Johnson, and Andrea Johnson.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. William A. Lent, Dr. James Asbury, and the nursing staff on the 7th floor Dunn Tower of Houston Methodist Hospital Medical Center for their loving care of Roger.
