Roger Bonney, a distinguished resident of Houston, Texas, peacefully passed away on September 17, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. Born on June 11, 1931 at St. Josephs Hospital in Houston, Texas, Roger was a man of exceptional achievements and unwavering dedication throughout his life.
Roger's educational journey began in Houston Public Schools, culminating in his graduation from S.F. Austin High School in 1949. He continued his pursuit of knowledge at Rice University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Economics in 1953. His thirst for learning led him to the University of Texas School of Law, where he obtained his J.D. in 1956.
Roger's professional career was marked by excellence and service. He joined the State Bar of Texas in 1956 and became a Certified Public Accountant, a distinction he held throughout his life. Roger served his country in the U.S. Naval Reserve, Supply Corps, from 1956 to 1968, with active duty from 1956 to 1960.
His remarkable career with Exxon, U.S.A., spanned three decades, from 1956 to 1986. He held various key roles, including Tax Manager for the Southeast Division, Chief Tax Council, and Tax Policy Coordinator. Roger's dedication to his work extended beyond Exxon, as he contributed to the American Bar Association Section of Taxation on numerous committees and the Houston Bar Association.
Roger's influence in the realm of taxation was extensive, notably as Chairman of the American Petroleum Institute General Committee on Taxation. He also served on the University of Houston Law Center faculty as an Adjunct Professor in State and Local Tax from 1988 to 1998. His expertise even extended globally, as he participated in the Russian Petroleum Legislative Project on Tax from 1992 to 1993.
On August 17, 1956, Roger married Patricia S. Hinrichsen in Houston, TX, and together they built a loving family.
Roger found love again, and on March 9, 1999, he married Jean Garmany Heidner in Houston, TX, creating a beautiful second chapter in his life.
Roger Bonney leaves behind a legacy of excellence, dedication, and a commitment to his family, community, and profession. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is preceded in death by wife Patricia H. Bonney, daughter Blanche “Cat” Bonney, son Malcolm H. Day and grandson Harry W. Hendon.
He is survived by his son Harold Bonney and his wife Karen, daughter Martha Bonney and her children Roger Bonney and his partner Rik Holthuizen; and daughter Sarah Bonney Watkins; grandson John Rooney and his wife Amanda Rooney and children Peyton Rooney, Holden Rooney and Skyler Rooney; granddaughter-in-law Carla Rooney; step-daughter Kathy Taylor and her husband Steve and their children Katy Taylor and her children Kylee Taylor and Kase Taylor, Cody Taylor and his son Braylen; and his beloved caregivers Larissa Ilboudo, Wendy Ilboudo and Francette Kouatchoua.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Animal charity of your choice in Roger's honor, to continue his tradition of loving animals and giving back to the community. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home 4525 Bissonnet St., Bellaire TX 77401. Reception to follow 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Christie's Seafood, 6029 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77057.
