Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.earthmanbellaire.com for her family.
Born Martine Marie Josée Fauquet on March 1, 1949 in Fours en Vexin in Normandy, France to Renee Emilie Pierrette Beranger and Germain Georges Henri Fauquet. She was the last of eight children. Like many families after WWII her family moved to Paris, France to begin again. She graduated from Victor Duruy High School in 1968 before completing a degree in speech pathology and audiology in Paris, France.
On September 25, 1971 she married her first husband, Dr. Jacques Chelly MD, PHD, MBA. They had three children together, Dr. Marjorie Chelly, Brice Chelly and Thomas Chelly. After their family was complete, they immigrated to Houston, Texas for better opportunities. Although they divorced in May of 1994, having known each other since the age of 17, having had three children together, and having shared many life transitions together prior to their divorce, they remained very close until her death.
In 1995 she met Mr. Ricardo Diez, an attorney originally from Mexico City, who had previously lived in New York City. They were married on April 13, 1996 and spent 21 years together in Houston, Texas until his death on May 18, 2019.
In 1990, after her first career of raising three children was nearly completed, she embarked on a second career involving research in the field of AIDS and HIV . The often forgotten global epidemic of AIDS/HIV, became her new baby. She started working first at the original Montrose Clinic in Houston, Texas as a junior research assistant. She then worked at UT Health Science Center in Houston, Texas in the Division of Infectious Disease under Dr. Roberto Arduino. She was deeply committed to her career and the patients she cared for. She adored “ the group” she worked with at UT, especially the people she called her “ work family.” At the end of her career she achieved the rank of senior research assistant.
Growing up in Normandy, France she developed a love for fresh apples from the orchards and fresh unpasteurized milk. She was raised to spend her summer vacations at the beach, a tradition she passed on to her children and grandchildren. Her grandmother taught her to care for all stray animals, be it a cat, a dog or a turtle crossing the road. Being French, she loved fashion, art, cheese, a good glass of champagne, coffee eclair, and preferred caramels to chocolate. In her free time she enjoyed tending to her garden, long walks, traveling and reading a good mystery novel.
She is preceded in death by her sisters - Edith Fauquet, Nicole Fauquet and Colette Fauquet - her brother Jean Pierre Fauquet, and her second husband Ricardo Joaquin Diez Hidalgo. She is survived by her three children: Dr. Marjorie Chelly and her husband David Bates of Shreveport, Louisiana; Brice Chelly, his wife Nicole Chelly and their daughters Lily Rose and Chloe Marie Chelly of Richmond, Texas; and Thomas Chelly and his wife Jennifer Chelly of Rosenberg, Texas; and her sisters Françoise Vendez, Annie Ourcival, Yvette Chelly and sister-in-law Michèle Fauquet, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
