Laurel Smith, aged 72 years old, died peacefully on June 23, 2016, after a long struggle with cancer. Laurel had a keen mind, was curious about the world around us and within us, loved living in the moment and finding joy in all things large and small in life.
Laurel was born on August 20, 1943 in Alameda, California, the daughter of Jessamine Louise (Russell) Buckwalter and James LeRoy Buckwalter. She completed most of her undergraduate education at University of California at Berkley and was awarded a degree in Botany from the University of California, Los Angeles. She received her PhD in Marine Biology from the University of California, San Diego in 1972. She completed her post-doctoral fellowship at Radcliff and went on to teach at Harvard University and then at Texas A&M University in Galveston. In addition, she received a certificate in Nonprofit Leadership from Rice University, was a certified organic vegetable gardening specialist, yoga instructor and Ikebana Instructor.
All her life she loved playing and being outdoors. She focused her knowledge and passion to increase awareness of the connection between people and their world by helping others understand where their food comes from and how to nurture a sustainable environment. She was an active member and leader of many organizations in the Houston area including Urban Harvest, serving as President. She was the Founder, President and Executive Director of Houston Urban Gardeners a not for profit organization, whose mission is to fully support Houstonians growing their own food and eating more fresh local produce. Texas Monthly recognized her because of her leadership efforts in the community. She valued the relationships developed through IONS as she explored the consciousness, transformation and realization of human potential. She brought joy to the world through her personal connections with the people she met, opening up her home to friends, colleagues and her community. Her creativity was expressed through her gardening, Ikebana arrangements, photography, writing, art nights with her children and gourmet meals.
Laurel is survived by Louis C. Smith, her loving husband of 24 years, her siblings Carol Louise Scribner, Thomas Buckwalter and Janet Buckwalter; her children Natasha Loeblich. Vanessa Swett, Hans Loeblich., Cynthia Graves; step-children Sherilyn Smith, Loree LaChance, Karen Jensen; grandchildren Charlotte Piper, Chandler Piper, Eric and Eliza Jensen, Jason Cobert, Jonathan Graves-Yu, Jacob Graves, Alexander Graves-Yu, Zachary Graves, Benjamin Graves, Max Graves as well as innumerable friends throughout the world.
Her memorial service will be on Friday July 15th, 2 pm at the Unity Church Pyramid 2929 Unity Drive in Houston. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to http://www.houstonurbangardeners.org.
