Dan was born on February 9, 1937, to Marion Leon Schomer and Mary Evelyn Schomer in Oklahoma City, OK. In 1943 his father moved the family to Los Angeles, CA for a job at Douglas Aircraft as an aeronautical engineer for the war effort. After the war the family moved to Houston, TX where his father worked as a mechanical engineer at Anderson Greenwood.
Dan was always an exceptional student. He graduated from Rice Institute with a double major in Accounting and Economics. He married Margaret Miller and worked for a year at Price Waterhouse. He became the youngest person in Texas to take and pass the CPA exam at age 21 and also attained the highest score that year.
He joined the US Navy in 1960 and entered Officer Candidate School in Newport News, VA. After graduating OCS he was assigned to USS Howard D. Crow stationed out of Galveston, TX. On the ship, his responsibilities included serving as the supply corps officer, disbursement officer, and cryptographic officer and was promoted to LTJG. During his time on the vessel he participated in the US blockade of Cuba in 1962. After that he served a tour of duty at the US Naval Air Station in Beeville, TX.
After fulfilling his US naval commitment in 1963, he continued his career in public accounting with Haskins & Sells. He later served as a partner with accounting firms including Alexander Grant and Coopers & Lybrand. He first retired from accounting at age 55. Later he returned to work to serve as partner with Pirsch and Mills replacing his longtime friend, John Pirsch after his death. He retired for a second time when he and his partner sold the firm to Briggs & Veselka.
Outside of work, Dan had a lifelong passion for playing bridge that began when he was twelve years old. His mother occasionally required an extra player when one of her friends could not attend a game. From that humble beginning, he went on to play in national tournaments and attained the rank of Sapphire Life Master. He gained many friends over the decades while playing bridge.
Dan and his brother Don, a physician at M.D. Anderson, obtained their private pilot's certificates at the same time and owned their first aircraft together, a 1972 Grumman Tiger. Dan later owned a 1964 Beechcraft Bonanza. Dan's other interests included snow skiing, swimming, biking, and rollerblading. He started rollerblading with his sons at age 71. He continued biking and swimming regularly well into his eighties.
