Newman W. Atkinson

90, of Terre Haute, formerly from Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away from a long battle with Alzheimer ’s disease, on Saturday morning, April 8, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Newman was born in Milton, Indiana, on April 20, 1926 to Albert Earl and Mary Bell O’Dell Atkinson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Verda Monzella Abercrombie Atkinson and 7 brothers and sisters, Charles (Nadeen) Atkinson, Mary Mae (Leonard) Hunter, Robert (Ethel) Atkinson, Lawrence (Joan) Atkinson, Ruth (John) Keller, Frank (Janie) Atkinson, and Jessie (Andrew) Downs. Newman is survived by his children, Newman E. (Connie) Atkinson, Susan (Robert) Nelson, Donald (Kathy) Atkinson, Cheryl (Eric) Jones, Russell (Angela) Atkinson, Eight grandchildren, Kristin (Sean) Cullen of Tucson, AZ, Benjamin Atkinson of Terre Haute, IN, Brandon (Ashley) Smithey of Nineveh, In, Joey Atkinson of Terre Haute, IN, Jordan Smithey of Franklin, IN, Ethan Atkinson and Nathanael Atkinson, both of Terre Haute, IN, Sierra Jones, of Madison, AL and one sister in law, Ethel Atkinson. Newman was a graduate of Warren Central High School Class of 1944. He retired from Indiana Bell (now known as AT&T) after 44 years as a cable repairman. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Newman had an insatiable sweet tooth and was especially fond of pie. He enjoyed putting around on is 1948 Allis Chalmers Model C tractor, gardening, spending time with family and his beloved pets over the years. He had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye for everyone that he met. In lieu of flowers donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in Newman’s memory are most appreciated. The family would like to thank the staff of Union Hospital, Clinton, Indiana and Hospice of the Wabash Valley for their unending support, compassion and wonderful care of our father. Visitation will be held Wednesday April 12th from 5:00-8:00 PM at Little & Sons Funeral Home Beech Grove Chapel. Funeral Services will be held Thursday April 13th at 10:30 AM in the funeral home.
