He was born on February 16, 1947 in Beech Grove, IN to Leonard and Mary Jane (Anderson) Slater who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of over 38 years, Lori, and son Nick, his pride and joy. Nothing came between Jim and his boy, not even mom. Jim is also survived by his sister, Judy Slater; niece, Lydia (James) Manni; nephew, Cliff (Tali) Wildman; great nieces, Sophia Manni and Dahlia Wildman; and great nephew Leo Manni. He was also a much-adored son-in-law, brother-in-law, and especially uncle to his wife’s family.
Jim graduated from Beech Grove High School in 1965 and earned a degree in Electronics Engineering before getting his bachelor’s in business administration from Marion University.
He honorably served in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1976 and was a true patriot and proud to be a part of the armed services. He enjoyed a trip earlier this year to the new National Museum of the United States Army in Fort Belvoir, VA. In Jim’s honor, his family has purchased a brick in his name to be laid in the museum’s garden.
Jim worked for various agencies for the State of Indiana for 38 years, the last being IDEM, where he was Director of Administrative Services, before retiring in 2009. He was a member of the Optimist Club for many years, helping Indianapolis youth and served as President in 1981. He was also a member of the Indianapolis Yacht Club and enjoyed many lake days, family outings and club events. He was known for his brutal tube rides and his nieces and nephews dubbed him the “mad scientist” which he adored!
He loved all sports, playing golf, boating, the Indianapolis 500 and cars, especially his beloved Corvette which he enjoyed driving on a beautiful day. He also loved hanging out with family and friends, swapping stories and laughter which usually resulted in a deck of trivia cards suddenly appearing. He was a contender!
Jim attended Geist Christian Church and especially loved the Christmas Eve service which was his favorite time of year.
