Every year at this time I find myself stopping and remembering this precious man!  We would spend Thanksgiving at the Mooney house for over 15 years.  Roger was the most loving, welcoming and kind human I have ever known.  He wouldn't just make the traditional Turkey, dressing, etc... for the holiday but also roast, chicken wings, baked beans and always had soooo many desserts.  He wanted to make sure everyone had their favorite foods.  I miss Roger dearly but always think of him fondly especially this time of year.  And when I think of him, I have soooo many sweet memories that warm my heart and make me smile.  Continued prayers for Debi, Matt and family.

Roger was such a nice man, always friendly, smiling  and willing to help.  Thinking of you today Debbie. 

I just found out Roger had passed away yesterday.  I saw Roger as a client for many years but also considered him a friend.  He was such a genuine humble man.  The world is a poorer place without him in it.  I will definitely miss him!

I will pray for strength and comfort for his family.

Roger was truly the sweetest, kindest man. He loved to cook and care for all those he knew. Once you knew him, you were family and oh... how he loved his family!!! Sending hugs to Debi, Matt and the family and praying your precious memories will help sustain you during this difficult time.

When someone becomes a memory the memory becomes a treasure...
Roger has left many people with treasures, including my family. He always made us feel as if we were a part of his family. His kindess and love for us will never be forgotten. 
It is said that people are placed in your life for a reason. I am thankful that he was placed in our lives.
 His footprints on our heart will remain with us forever.

Roger was a great man who done so much to change the lives of everyone he encountered. The world needs more people like Roger Mooney, He will truly be missed by all.

Such a great man and the best teacher I ever had, hands down.  He touched the lives of so many.  Many prayers and much love for the family.   

I graduated with Roger in 1965 from Stoco High School. I remember him as being smart, friendly, courteous and happy. He was also very kind to my daughter Heather, which as a mom means a lot. My deepest condolences to his family. 

Debbie, Matt & Family - Roger was quite a special person setting the bar for professionalism & just living life in general. Although we have not been in touch for a few years,  we remember all the good times & special occasions that we enjoyed together in the 1980's & 1990's. Dear Debbie, Matt and family,

I'm so sorry about Roger. It was a pleasure working with him. He was always so kind to me. He will surely be missed. 



When we lose someone we love, we must learn not to live without them, but to live with the love they left behind. 

We miss you greatly Roger but you left enough love for all.

My wife  Meena and I were extremely sad to hear about the demise of our friend and colleague   Roger Mooney. He worked with us briefly at St Alban’s mental health services in Beckley in the 80s. He was a good psychologist  and an asset to our team.Over the years I was able to meet him and Debbie at psychiatric  dinner meetings . I will miss his friendly smile and pleasant demeanor. He was a good soul who was a benefit to mankind. May his soul rest in peace. Our condolences to Debbie, Matt and family.

My heart aches for you all.  I am so glad to have had the opportunity to know and work with Roger.  He was one of the most intelligent, compassionate and genuine folks that I have ever known.  He set the bar high for the professional that all of  us should strive to be.

Roger was a true gentleman.  So kind and humble.  Always took the time to listen.  All his patients and co-workers thought the world of him. 

I had only got to spend time with Roger a few times, however each of those times were family activities that Jason and I were included in. Roger and Debbie from the first time we met treated us like family that they had known for years. Roger will be greatly missed and the world is a little darker without his light shining for all to see.

Some of you knew my dad and some of you didn’t.  Very few people know about 1.5 months ago he was diagnosed with liver cancer. He fought a short but hard battle.

My father was the best man I’ve ever known. 

In my work I tell people that no individuals’ character (for the most part) is entirely good or evil. We are grey. We have good traits and traits we would rather not have. We make decisions we are proud of and decisions we are not.  We’ve all been there. 

I have found only one example that contradicts this.   

My father.

He grew up very poor in Whitby, WV youngest son of a coal miner and his wife. The kind of poor I speak of is the kind where indoor plumbing references to a pail of water brought in from a well a distance away. Of course he didn’t see the poverty in it, only the joy of a simple life and the joy of family. He was not interested in money well earned  in the coal mines  or material things; his heart and his dreams lay elsewhere. He became the first member of the family to graduate college. Not that he stopped there. He eventually became a well respected and published psychologist. He was one of the earlier licensed psychologists in the state of WV and one of the longest practicing at least in my opinion. He married my mother in 1978 and I was born the following year. 

I cannot say anything even remotely negative regarding my childhood. All my younger years are filled with love. He gave me the joyous and gentle childhood that many children are not granted. I always knew that I was loved and he was proud of me. 

My father was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather. He will hopefully carry on through me; through the best of me. 

I hope I can continue to navigate this world with love, humbleness and gratitude as my father encouraged. He helped me remember there are in fact good people in the world during more difficult times. 




Dr. Mooney shared his knowledge and skills with many of us that he trained through many years.  Many of us owe much of what we know about helping people to him. His influence in helping people directly and indirectly who suffer from mental health challenges will last for many years to come. So many patients, coworkers, and friends are so grateful for knowing him.   

Uncle Roger was a  kind, soft spoken and selfless person.  I always looked forward to spending time with him and his family. A lot of wonderful memories. He will be terribly missed.  Cindy B.
