Randy Lee Adkins, age 46. Of Mount Hope, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2020. Born on November 24, 1973 in Beckley, WV, he was the son of Hattie Lea Bragg Adkins and the late Jessie C. Adkins.
Randy was the Valedictorian of the 1992 graduating class of Shady Spring High School. He graduated from WVU with his bachelor’s degree in Biology and General Science Education and later with his master’s degree in Special Education from Marshall University.
Randy started his career with Raleigh County Schools as a special education teacher at Trap Hill Middle (1999-2005) and as a Biology teacher who worked at Independence High School (2005-2009.) After receiving his administration degree from Marshall University he then went on to become the Assistant Principal at Independence Middle School (2009-2011). In 2011 he became the Principal of Independence Middle School until later becoming the Director of Personnel for Raleigh County Schools in 2013. He was currently the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction since 2015.
Randy was an avid reader his entire life focusing on improving education, learning about culture and also enjoyed reading for pleasure. He often loved to drive and listen to podcasts of all kinds of genres. He loved to travel with his family each summer. His favorite place to travel would be anywhere with sand and sun. He and his wife have hosted two exchange students which had become his children from abroad. They are Thanyanan Seingjindarat of Thailand and Gabriele Turazzo of Italy. One of Randy’s favorite trips was to China where he went to learn about their style of teaching and learning.
In addition to his father, Jessie C. Adkins, who resided in Shady Spring, Randy was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Will and Gladys Bragg, of White Oak; his paternal grandparents, Kessler and Stella Adkins, of Pluto; and his siblings, Clyde Mitchell Adkins of Florida and Joseph Dewayne Adkins of Daniels.
Those left to cherish his memory include his spouse, Lisa Adkins; daughter, Zoe Adkins; son, Samuel Adkins; his mother, Hattie Lea Bragg Adkins; siblings, Tammy Lilly and her husband, Dennis of Flat Top, and Mike Adkins, all of Flat Top; one niece; Christie Hart of Flat Top; and three great-nephews, Hayden, Ryker and Corbin Hart, all of Flat Top.
A No Contact Drive Thru Celebration of Life will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home.
