John was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1936 and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1967. He was a retired mining engineer with the Peabody Coal Company. In retirement he loved taking cruises with his wife Susan and rooting on the WVU Mountaineers and Pittsburgh Steelers. But most of all, he enjoyed simply spending time with family and friends. He lived out his final two years of life at The Villages at Greystone in Beaver, West Virginia where he was surrounded on a daily basis by the devoted staff and caregivers that never failed to add love to his day.
John was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years Susan Mitchell as well as his parents George and Margaret Mitchell from Ayrshire, Scotland.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted children Craig (Becky) Mitchell of Richmond, Kentucky, and Ona Hudspeth of Center, Texas, sister Ona (Kevin) Charman of Wigan, England, grandchildren Kaela (Cory) Ward and Taylor (Ashley) Hudspeth, great-grandchildren Casen, Coen, Callen, and Kenson Ward, many loving nieces, nephews, and family from Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom, and a host of many friends and neighbors that will miss him dearly.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 19, 2022 at 1 PM with Pastor Michael Knotts at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive in Beckley, WV. Visitation for family and friends will be one hour prior to the time of the service.
