Paul Joseph Meyers, of Portland, OR, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on June 23, 2016. Paul was born in Portland on March 6, 1945, to Joseph and Claudia Meyers. He married Mary French of Norwood, MA, on November 11, 1972. They had two children, Andrew and Stephanie.
The Meyers family belonged to St. Philip Neri parish, and Paul attended primary school at St. Philip Neri Catholic School. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1963, and then attended University of Portland before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1966. Paul was trained as a linguist and served in the 525th Military Intelligence Group in Vietnam.
Paul returned to Portland after his service in the Army. He continued his studies at University of Portland before ultimately graduating in 1971 from Portland State University with a BA in Business.
Paul met the love of his life, Mary, in 1966 during his linguistics and intelligence training in Washington, D.C.. Upon his homecoming from the Army, Mary moved to Portland, and Paul and Mary were married.
Paul worked for Bingham Willamette Steel before joining Pope and Talbot Lumber. He had a passion for sales and was an entrepreneur, founding United Forest Products in the early 1980s. Paul was a member of the Western Hardwoods Association and devoted many hours to the development and betterment of the lumber industry.
Paul loved the beautiful outdoors of the Pacific Northwest and was an avid fisherman. He had a particular love of fly fishing and learned to tie his own flies.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary, son Andrew, (Stephanie), daughter Stephanie Morrison, (Taylor), and grandchildren Mae, Audrey, and Carter.
Donations in Paul’s memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Fund or the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.
