Buford Truitt Stewart passed away November 11, 2022. He was born April 28, 1934, to Stella and Olen Stewart in Malakoff, Texas. He was the second of nine children. At an early age, Truitt’s family relocated to Bacliff, Texas. Truitt was a standout as the captain of the Dickenson High School football team. He was honored as an all-state middle linebacker and eventually earned a position on the Dickenson “All-Century” Team. Following graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps Reserves.
Truitt worked at BF Goodrich as foreman of operations and retired after a notable career. He enjoyed being in the outdoors, golfing, camping, or fishing. He particularly enjoyed crisp autumn mornings on the lake, looking for that next trophy bass. He had a fondness for travel, whether it was in a tent, popup camper, fifth wheel or timeshare apartment. He and his wife Darlene travelled extensively. He enjoyed exploring our great country, from the Pacific to the Atlantic. He was able to see the majesty of many of our national treasures such as The Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain National Park, Yosemite, Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, The Mississippi River, The Smokey Mountains, The Badlands, The Blueridge Parkway, New England in Autumn, and of course Texas and the Gulf of Mexico. He also visited Canada, Mexico, and Europe.
His mechanical prowess served him well. If it had a motor, he could fix it. He was a skilled carpenter, building or remodeling several homes. He converted the garage into a makeshift paint booth and painted vehicles himself. He was known for creating workshop novelties such as pecan crackers, belt buckles and bookends. He was also proficient in more delicate things, like sewing and leather tooling.
Truitt was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Wilma and brothers Jackie, Tommy, Bo, and Jimmy.
His life will be celebrated by his wife, Darlene, sisters Virginia, Linda and Renee, his children, Carol and husband Herb, Lori and husband Bryan, Dwight and wife Brenda, step daughter Rhonda and husband Scott, step son Mike and his partner Ginger, grandchildren Cassie and husband John, Ray, Corey and wife Katie, BJ and wife Larissa, Sheryl and husband Gabby, Mick and wife Laci, Andrzej, Keely, Peyton and husband Brennan, and Camden, great grandchildren, Anastasia, Whitney, Riker, Carter, Parker, Chayce, Chloe, Carley, Michael, Sebastian, Trey, Isaiah, Angel, Myra, Faith, Wyatt and Austin and great-great granddaughter Jo Jo.
