Trevor will always be remembered for his kindness, mentorship, love and dedication to his family, friends, and students. He was an avid outdoorsman and sports fan. A product of GCCISD, Trevor graduated from Ross S. Sterling High School Class of 1988 and became the Head Coach and Campus Athletic Coordinator at Highlands Junior High after graduating from Lamar University. He coached many students not only through school, but also Highlands Little League.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Travis and Mildred Smith and Dub and Melba Miller; grandparents-in-law Buddy May and Martha Dykes, and Aunt Linda Miller. He is survived by his wife, Crystal Smith; children Brittany and Bella Smith and Cagen and Cydni Selensky; grandson, Atticus Selensky-Guy; parents, Travis and Patricia Smith; mothers and fathers-in-law, Chuck and Cheryl Kutan and Steve and Drenda Halbert, grandfather, Curtis Dykes; sister, Angela Smith; sisters & brothers-in-law, Amber and Jared Janak and Ashely Halbert and Noah Gober; nephews and nieces, Blake, Bryce and Charlotte Ainsworth, Jett and Jax Janak and Crew Gober; uncles and aunts, Johnny Miller, Curtis and Jan Smith, Robert and Brenda Fairchild; cousins, Sherry Willhoite, Michelle Padgett, Bryan Miller and Kelly Burch and many others.
A stranger to none, Trevor would make friends wherever he went. He has made a few pretty good friends while shopping at Academy or eating at restaurants, especially ones while at the deer lease. Some of Trevor’s favorite times were spent at the deer lease with family and friends in San Saba, Texas. He began hunting at age 6 and it was a lifelong love of his. Most of his time hunting was for deer, but he also enjoyed dove hunting with his dad and cousins, hunting duck and geese with friends, and late-night hog hunts with the guys at the lease.
Fishing was something that Trevor wished he could have done more of. He had a ball when he was able to drop a line in the water. It didn’t matter if he was fishing for bass, catfish, crappie, trout, or reds, he was happy just to be spending time on the water with friends.
Another of Trevor’s beloved pastimes was playing, coaching, and watching baseball. He was a lifelong Houston Astros fan and always joked with his sister, Angela about her needing to do a good job of rooting the ‘Stros to a victory. He coached baseball with Highlands Little League for several years and was voted Manager of the Year in 2021. Trevor has spent the last 14 years coaching boys’ football, basketball, and tennis at Highlands Junior. He put his heart and soul into mentoring the youth in Highlands and Baytown not only on the field but in life as well. His legacy will live on through all the students and players whose lives he touched.
Trevor’s number one love in life was his family; being the best brother, father, husband, and son brought him the most joy. He was his parents’ pride and joy, Angela’s best friend and protector, Crystal’s love and much better half, Brittany’s and Bella’s hero and a great friend to Cagen and Cydni. Trevor always bragged about his family to friends, co-workers and even strangers he met in town. That love, his friendly smile, infectious laugh, and kind heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A life well-lived is a precious gift of HOPE and STRENGTH and GRACE from someone who has made our world a brighter, better place.
