Mary Jean Webb Alexander Gunn, 91 of Baytown, Texas passed on November 16, 2022. Mary Jean was a very sociable person. She enjoyed meeting people and visiting. She was a beloved mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, aunt, and friend.
Mary Jean was born to A. C. Webb and Willie Mae Pitcock Webb, October 28, 1931 in Kilgore, Texas. She attended Anahuac High School where she was a star cheerleader. She departed school early to marry her first husband at the age of 17. She was awarded her GED in 1953. She became a stay at home mother to 5 children and volunteered with the PTA, selling war bonds, and other needed activities. Mary Jean attended a Technical School in Pasadena excelling at her shorthand and other secretarial skills. After years of being a stay at home mother, she entered the workforce in 1966, working as a secretary and office manager. Later in life, she became a retail salesclerk for Macy’s (formerly Foley’s) where she retired at the age of 68. Her sense of style and love of the retail business led her to being the top sales associate of the month frequently. Her assistance was often requested in choosing clothing and accessories.
Mary Jean had a green thumb and in retirement loved working in her yard and cultivating plants. She enjoyed taking cuttings and growing them into full, healthy plants. From 2 crepe myrtles she was able to border her backyard with 16 plants. She also grew a pecan tree taller than the roof of her house from a pecan.
She was preceded in death by ex-husbands John H Alexander, Sr. and Douglas Gunn, mother and father, Willie Mae Webb and A. C. Webb, brother Allen C. Webb, sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and Billy D. Walker, and daughter-in-law Cindy Alexander.
She is survived by children and spouses: John Alexander, Jr. (Deborah), George Alexander (Rita), Mark Steven Alexander (Friend, Vickie), Mary Beth Alexander Obermeier (Tom), Elizabeth Alexander Filer (Ron). Grandchildren and spouses: John H. Alexander III (April), Blake Alexander (Kelly), Candice Alexander Boyle (Kenneth), Georganne Alexander Ratliff (Marlon), Donielle Alexander Cook (Kevin), Mark Alexander (Anna), Lauren Obermeier Travis (Neil), Chris Obermeier (Elizabeth), Fahlan Ford Hales (Ross), Cagan Filer and Sophie Filer. Great grandchildren: Kaley Alexander, Madison Alexander, August Alexander, Blake Alexander, Jr., Jake Alexander, Landon Boyle, Brandon Ratliff, Loriann Ratliff, Harrison Cook, Ivy Cook, Walker Alexander, John Paul Alexander, Josie Travis, Peter Travis, and Addison Obermeier. Also many nieces and nephews.
Mary Jean was a member of Second Baptist Church of Baytown. Her funeral will be officiated by Dave Jirrels and Mark Stafford.
A big thank you to Mom’s caretaker Loretta Zeno for assisting us with all the doctor’s visits and mom’s care at daughter Elizabeth’s house. Her patience and love for our mother was amazing.
The family wanted to send many thanks and appreciation to The Pines at Oakhurst Memory Care staff in Spring, Texas for all of their care and tenderness during the past year. Also thank you to the Oasis Hospice Care Team who have given our mother tender loving care in the last 6 months. Their caring for our mother and the family has comforted us during this difficult time.
Pallbearers will be: John Alexander III, Blake Alexander, Kenneth Boyle, Mark Alexander, Chris Obermeier, and Cagan Filer.
A visitation is scheduled for Saturday, 11/26/2022 at 10am at Earthman’s Funeral Home in Baytown. Funeral services to follow at 11am and then burial at Memory Gardens in Baytown. A small reception will follow at Earthman’s Funeral Home after the burial.
