Mary Elizabeth Havis Clanton

Mary Elizabeth Havis Clanton, 92, of Cleveland, formerly Baytown, went to be with the Lord on December 11, 2024. She was born in Baytown, Texas on March 26, 1932, to Hinton James Havis and Bonnie Jean Holleman Havis. Mary graduated from Cedar Bayou High School in 1949. As she would say, she was “Cedar Bayou through-and-through”. She married Dalton Alex Clanton in 1951 and was married for 68 years until his death in 2020. Mary worked at her father’s grocery store, Havis Grocery & Market, beginning in her teenage years. She went on to work at Black’s Pharmacy, Foremost Dairy, and later as a homemaker. She was a Charter member of Cedar Bayou Baptist Church, a longtime member of the Baytown Youth Fair Association, and a member of the Baytown Rough Rider’s Club, where she coordinated many youth activities. Once her grandchildren started school, Mary became an active room-mother for many years at Crockett Elementary.

She was known by many names including Honey, Sistie, Sitty, and Liz. No matter what you knew her as, you knew the love she had for God, her family, and her cattle. She could still bottle-feed a calf at the age of 92! There was no one more strong-willed, stubborn, determined, or loving than our Honey.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Dalton Alex Clanton; father, Hinton James Havis; mother, Bonnie Jean Holleman Havis; and brother, Jack Hinton Havis.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Alecia and Edwin Baxley; grandchildren, Shaun Baxley, Shanna Thornton and husband Cody, and Sharra Comstock and husband Michael; great grandchildren, Raegan, Chris, Colton, Shane, Mason, Gunner, Brady, and Wade; great-great grandchildren Cayson and Charlotte; along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Monday, December 16, 2024, at Navarre Funeral Home, 2444 Rollingbrook Dr., Baytown, Texas 77521. Funeral service will be at 11 am, Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at Navarre Funeral Home Chapel. Committal will follow at Cedarcrest Cemetery, Baytown, Texas.
