Marshall Durward Bailey, 96, of Baytown, passed away Saturday, February 12, 2011 in Baytown. He was born December 5, 1914 in Elkton, Kentucky to his late parents, Seth Marshall Bailey and Jessie Bass Bailey and the family moved to Baytown when he was 16 years old.
He graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors Degree from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas and attained a Masters Degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
Marshall taught math in Hebronville and in the Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District for 4 years, was retired from Humble Oil after 9 years in Pumping and Guaging and 21 years in Employee Relations. He then retired from the Veterans Administration after 12 years as a Senior Claims Adjuster.
Mr. Marshall was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in France during World War II as Heavy Machine Gunner. He was wounded, on August 25, 1944, by a mortar shell and received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Combat Infantryman's Badge.
He served in the Disabled Veterans as State Commander, National Executive Committeeman for Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas, National Finance Committeeman and as State Constitution Commission Chair many times.
As a member of Grace United Methodist Church Mr. Bailey served as Church School Teacher, Youth Superintendent, Chairman of the Board on Christian Education, Trustee of the Church, Chairman of the Administrative Board and Charge Lay Leader.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 65 years, Addie Belle Bailey; brothers, E. B. Bailey and Lanny Bailey and a sister, Joyce Payne.
Survivors include his daughters, Shirley Box of Baytown and Peggy Stephens and her husband Roger of Combs, Arkansas; sister, Lorna McCraw and her husband Leon of Baytown; grandchildren, Richard Box and his wife Michelle, Greg Landry and his wife Krisinda, Michael Box and his wife Shelly, Chris Landry and his wife Donna and Roger Dee Stephens; 9 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
His family would like to thank all the caretakers and staff on Level 3 at Remington Park. Their care and devotion has meant a lot to the family.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Navarre Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at Cedar Bayou Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. Carol Turner officiating. Interment will be at Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Richard Box, Michael Box, Garrett Box, Chris Landry, Greg Landry, Dustin Landry, Josh Landry and Roger Stephens.
