Carolyn was born November 16, 1935, in Baton Rouge, LA of Harry Evans Cier and Nina Maude Bookter Cier.
She graduated from Deer Park High School. She then received her Bachelor of Elementary Education, minor in Music from Baylor University, where she met Cyrus Boyd Fletcher, her future husband. She went on to earn a Master of Arts in Teaching From New Mexico State University. A lover of learning, she also obtained her Kodály Certification from Sam Houston State University.
She went on the marry Cyrus on March 15, 1958, at Wooster Baptist Church of Baytown, TX. They were happily married for 59 years, and raised four bright and successful children. For many years she served and ministered alongside Cyrus as he pastored churches in NM and TX.
She enjoyed a distinguished career in Elementary Education, but music was her most cherished subject. She devoted 19 years of exceptional contributions to the musicianship of children in G.C.C.I.S.D. She retired as music teacher at Stephen F. Austin Elementary.
Throughout her life in the church, she served as a pianist, organist, and leader of children’s church choirs.
Carolyn, also known as Grandy by her grandchildren, was an exquisite baker who designed and created beautiful cakes and desserts for family and as a professional caterer. A lover of the arts, she especially enjoyed music, both spiritual and secular. She was also a graphic artist and an avid reader. Sewing was a treasured hobby of hers, along with gardening, an activity that consistently reminded her of the majesty of God’s creation.
She was a beautiful nurturer and did her best to connect with everyone she met. Her faith in Christ was central to her life and she loved to share it with others.
Justa Carolyn is survived by her husband, Cyrus; her children, Justa Elaine Anders and husband Nick, Alexander Boyd Fletcher and wife Maureen, Amy Lea Beall and husband Scott, Sr., and Kevin Cier Fletcher and wife Sharon; sisters, Annette Holmes and husband Robert, Evelyn Buss and husband Jim; grandchildren, Justa Lanie Garrett and husband Jeremy, Melody Brown and husband Justin, Stephen, Emily, Almeta, Scott D., Samuel, and Olivia Beall, and Andrea and Jessica Fletcher; great-grandchildren Rex Brown and Justa Rose Garrett.
Visitation will be held at Navarre Funeral Home, Wednesday, August 16, from 6-8 pm. The funeral service will be at First Baptist Church of Baytown on Thursday, August 17, at 10 am., interment to follow at Memory Gardens.
